Volkswagen’s new car will be sold directly through Kakao which operates Kakao Talk which is the largest and dominant mobile messenger platform in South Korea.
Acording to the articles by Korean media, Kakao Mobility will cooperate with Audi Volkswagen Korea to promote online sales of Volkswagen’s new car lineup. Kakao Mobility is a subsidiary of Kakao’s location-based platform that operates Kakao Map(Waze or Google Map), Kakao Taxi(Like Uber and Grab and Hailo) the Korean market.
Kakao Talk users can purchase Volkswagen’s new vehicle information and check all the processes such as test drive reservations, estimate calculations and purchases via the sales platform. Currently, in the automotive and IT industries, they expect services will be launched in the fourth quarter of 2017.
In July, the high level and C-Levels of Volkswagen Group from Germany visited the Kakao headquarters and started discussing collaboration in relation to the mobility field and is considering many cases and opportunities.
There has been some promotional cases to sell cars via online market only but this will be the first time to sell the car directly from mobile messenger platform only. If this experiment shows success this will be another reference case of M-Commerce with high price products.
With its dominant position in this market, Kakao is expanding a lot in Korean market. Recently, Kakao has entered into banking business, and is now disrupting the finance ground rules.
